In his review of the 2002 student congress, Ian Tyndall of NUIG commented
that:
"For the Congress to be truly a meeting of all Irish psychology
students, it would be nice to see participation from students from Departments
in institutions such as University College Cork and University of Ulster,
Jordanstown"
(Irish Psychologist, September 2002).
While we cannot speak for Jordanstown, we are pleased to report that
2003 marked the year when participation from students in UCC
was resumed
in earnest, with the hosting of the 25 th PSI Annual Student Congress,
the first time it had been held on Leeside since 1998.
Opening ceremony
The Congress was held in University College Cork on the last weekend
in March, Friday 28 th to Sunday 30 th . The Opening Ceremony in Boole
4 was preceded by a wine reception and what with the wine being plentiful
and free, and students being students, it was not long before this became
a relaxed, good-humoured and occasionally hilarious affair.
The Congress was officially opened by Cllr. Jim Corr, who was deputising
for the Lord Mayor of Cork . Cllr. Corr took great pleasure in welcoming
all visitors to the 'Real Capital' and spoke of the importance of third-level
education to 21 st Century Ireland . Professor Max Taylor, head of the
Department of Applied Psychology in UCC, then welcomed delegates on behalf
of both the college and the department. Dr. James Connolly, president
of the PSI, spoke on behalf of the society, followed by Dr. Jurek Kiriakowski,
in his capacity as Head Adjudicator for the Congress. Dr. Connolly then
retook the stage and gave a highly entertaining and interactive talk on
practising psychology. Proceedings were chaired throughout by Ms. Mary
Moore-Corry, Auditor of the UCC Psychological Society.
The Opening Ceremony completed; students proceeded to the Qube, a late
bar/nightclub on Cork 's Oliver Plunkett St. , where a healthy disregard
was shown for the next morning's early start.
