Continuing Professional DevelopmentBackgroundMembers will know from the Irish Psychologist that Continuing Professional Development (CPD), as a formal operation of The Psychological Society of Ireland, came into effect on January 1st 2004. From this date, its functions become available to all members. Following feedback from the membership, it was decided that, initially, engaging with the framework would be on a voluntary basis and does not have any implications for those holding graduate membership of the society. A “comfort zone” existed until the end of 2004 for members to experience the new framework and to allow for the monitoring of the framework. In 2005 a coupling mechanism that linked CPD to registration was introduced. The introduction of such a mechanism required and received the endorsement of the membership and was the subject of a motion at the General Meeting in 2004. How does the CPD System work?Since January 1st 2004, PSI accredits CPD events and awards credits that members could subsequently log. CPD event organisers, regardless of membership status of PSI, can apply to have activities accredited by PSI and then advertise such events as official PSI-accredited CPD events. Members attending the accredited event sign a register of attendance and the event organiser submits this to PSI to be held on record. The member subsequently fills in their logbooks and PSI will request this at the end of a 3 year cycle, initially from Registered Members but other categories of members are encouraged to also submit CPD logs. Members who attend non-accredited events can also log this activity in the same way. There will not be a PSI register of attendance at such events and the number of CPD credits will be lower than PSI accredited events. At the end of the cycle, subject to satisfactory completion of CPD requirements, a letter of confirmation will be issued from PSI to the member. The Society's Director of Professional Development will implement the day to day running of the CPD scheme. The key principles of the scheme are set out below in the following document: Workshop at the Annual Conference 2007 - The CPD log: Completing and Compliance CPD - Directed Activity Log CPD Questionnaire: The Society’s first three year CPD cycle is now complete and members have spent many hours completing CPD logs. We would like to get a greater understanding of members’ experience of completing the CPD logs and would be grateful if those members who have submitted logs could complete this short survey and return it to the PSI Office by post or by email to cpd@psihq.ie. CPD monitoring - Interim Results November 2007 For a full list of CPD events and the relevant number of credits please see the following document: CPD Updates Please check this page and the Irish Psychologist for regular updates on CPD.
